Wed 23rd Jul 2008 - River outflows reduce CO2
Researchers have discovered a significant and surprising drawdown of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into the tropical ocean by microorganisms living in the Amazon River's outflow.

Other large tropical rivers of the world also may contribute to carbon capture, said Doug Capone, a marine scientist at the University of Southern California and co-author of the PNAS paper, adding that studies on such rivers are in progress.

So whilst the world needs clean energy and river Dams, on the face of it, provide this. Could it be said that Dam projects around the world are not only taking out stretches of white water but may also threaten this delicate balance.
